Peeking into Young Minds

Nine-tenths of a child’s brain development occurs by around the time they start kindergarten. For UT child development researchers studying the fascinating period of human experience, one place on campus has proved central for nearly a century. The Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory – a preschool and space for early childhood scientific observation – has facilitated in-depth research and provided a launching pad for hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, deepening their grasp of the science of child development. Generations of families in the Austin area now have passed through the school. To celebrate its upcoming centennial, the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences is hosting scientific and celebratory events all year and collecting stories from lab school alumni.
